This charming fellow has been following my thoughts about quite a lot recently. I’ve had to come to the conclusion that it (or he, BD hasn’t really given that away yet) is something of a muse, bringing me ideas like a pet dog brings sticks. Whoever trained him/it, I applaud you.
I have graduated, I now have a 3rd Degree in Illustration, and BD has brought me so many ideas I’m not sure where to start. I have a short story/poem actually about a Black Dog planned, also a serious of tongue-in-cheek comics about silly things learnt from computer games. Along with these more illustrative things, I’m co-planning some longer stories with a couple of charming fellows named Dominic and Samuel, these too shall be illustrated eventually – even if the world building doesn’t get as far as actual story writing.
It’s going to be a fun summer and I now have my Black Dog guiding me.
Website
I have a website! A proper one now, to showcase my work. It still needs some work, the biggest of which is trying to link it to the right name but for the moment you can find it here or on the ‘About’ page of this blog.
More Editorials!
So much for updating once a day but to make up for it, here’s a bunch of editorial images I’ve done since the last update:
First of all, Romans. Apparently Britain was more advanced, before their invasion, than Roman history seems to have implied. Yes, we had a straight road BEFORE the Romans arrived, they just built over the top. A facepalm moment indeed.
Next up, a g2 special on Evolution. This cover was originally illustrated already so I wanted to try something different. Contrary to what the original illustration implies, it’s mainly about human evolution, but I liked the idea of it being a race – it is in a way. Considering all the creatures I didn’t want to overcomplicate it with loads of shading and different colours so we’ve gone with a plain rainbow block effect.
Third, on the Royal Mail being sold off privately. This has happened in the Netherlands and fails spectacularly, according to the report, so more blocky colouring to show how this would be a bad idea. The iconic post box (Royal Mail Red is a trademarked colour…) being carted away.
Apparently, psycadelic drugs are being used to treat depression, or are being suggested to do so. So many colours… I was going to go all out and throw in some dragons and unicorns but seeing as it was a serious article (from BBC Focus) I just stuck with the colours (It’s a double page spread, hence the line in the middle)
Our inbuilt nagvagation systems are faulty. Do not rely on it or you will run into polar bears looking for the beach, like this poor woman:
And finally. PUPPY!
Folf? Wox? Wolfox?
A Surprisingly Delayed Update
Two months. Ouch. A fair amount, work wise, has changed since then. The major thing being a change in my final project. As my original plan didn’t cover the grading criteria, my tutors felt rather than trying to force it to fit these, I should change my idea entirely. I’m now using articles from the Guardian’s g2 magazine, and a handful of articles from BBC Focus magazine, to come up with alternate illustrations (or simply images). As it happens, the g2 seems to be only using photographs now in its articles, which I think is unfortunate as I seem to recall some fantastic illustrated articles in the past.
With my phoenix-like renewed interest in digital art I decided this was the perfect opportunity to experiment with some new styles and ways of drawing/colouring on Photoshop – with the help of a highly recommended (by me) book on digital art: Digital Painting Techniques, Volume 2
So far I have the following final pages to take to a critique group when the new term starts:
An interesting article on the so-called ‘Death of the landline’. Here an old-fashioned phone rings pathetically from the bottom of a wheelie bin (though I’m aware this may not be immediately obvious, not all wheelie bins are green for a start).
And the image for the inner article. A more modern landline phone being answered by… well a rat, after being discarded. For some reason I have a fondness for rats and mice in my images, they feature in a fair few on my projects. Here I was playing about with textures – a variant on the tutorial book which suggests making one’s own brushes for these textures (unfortunately my Photoshop Elements isn’t kitted out to make nice custom brushes so I had to improvise).
Both of these use a new technique that involves painting and shading in grey scale before adding a Colour Layer over the top. This has it’s good and bad points, good in that it adds simple colour quickly, bad in that often the layer ‘filter’ changes the orignal colour from what one might assume so involves some experimentation.
Here we have a dragon. Shoe Shopping. As you do…
The original cover was, in my opinion, boring. it was a pair of shoes on a red background with the headline underneath. This cover does come across as a little bit cluttered, I have to say, but gives more interest to the eye and suggests the headline more than a pair of classical Clarks shoes.
I do feel more fond of this article, oddly enough. I live about 15 minutes drive away from Clarks village and used to go to collage in the town (Street). The college was in fact started as a school to educate the workers of the first Clarks factory. STRODE COLLEGE PRIDE!
And finally, a simpler, somewhat tongue-in-cheek image for a Focus article on reintroducing mammoths to the world through cloning. I know they have badger- and frog-crossings in rural areas where said creatures are in danger of being run over while they cross to favored areas either side of roads. If mammoths were introduced, and protected, they can have crossings of their own. Complete with zebra markings and flashing globes. Not that a mammoth needs such warnings, they’re pretty obvious after all.
I could be known for having what’s been described as ‘trippy’ images: a rat answering a phone, a dragon shoe shopping and a mammoth crossing a road. Next possible image involves a wolf and a fox out on a date.
I do like obscure things like this.
Role Play Animation
Well! I seem to be going great guns with my posts at the moment, one a day for the last 3 days: I am THAT into my work, it seems.
Here we have the not-quite-fully-polished-but-showable animation for my final project for university; implementing some research of role play through history and ending with my pitch for the project (I know, I’m a term behind, but last term was too crazy to think straight for this)
Anyway, the link to the youtube video is here because wordpress charges for a blog to host a video… Please note you can only find this video by clicking this link – thank you youtube viewing options!
Some Photoshop things
The animation is needing finishing but I felt like trying to get back my abandoned photoshop painting/drawing skills – last year I tried to go back to more traditional means, watercolour and pencil, but I was never happy with what I could get; I almost feel like I lost a year but I’ve learnt from it, for sure.
So here we have:
Project Castle – Coat of Arms
This was designed with suggestions from the Lord of the castle, he asked for an eagle and a gryphon to be incorporated into the design, the Lady asked for a wolf. The rest was up to me. The motto down the bottom means “Sincerity gives wings to strength” – interestingly enough, the colours and eagle on the shield symbolise this motto, despite them being chosen separately. The two supporters (the animals either side of the shield), I will admit, are shamelessly based on an existing design however the rest is hand drawn right into photoshop. A lot of help from wikipedia went into this, horay for internet research!
Next we have a concept for my character in the roleplay group I’ve just started (which doubles as my final major project for uni)
Based on Indian clothing, this particular one, the detail patterning was fun. I do enjoy painting like this, draped clothing has a wonderful flow to it, one almost feels as if you’re slowly smoothing it into shape. I’ve not really done ‘drapery’ much before, always done armour and such like, an oddly satisfying change.
Work Update and Project Castle
Fair amount of stuff going on at the moment work-wise. Two commissions, one in early stage; my final major project for uni, involving pen and paper roleplay (animation to follow soon); and a side project I dip into when I feel uninspired, the aforementioned Project Castle.
The poetry commission is going through a bit of a revamp currently, keep an eye out for updates regarding that if you’re interested – will be finished by Easter. The other early-stage commission is rather hush hush in regards to images, as per instruction from the commissioner.
However Project Castle I shall post images when they come up. The idea is for me to fully map out the castle and its grounds then design heraldry, guard and servant uniforms and interior concepts.
Currently I’m still in the map stage, the following map is rather large (comprising of 5 pieces of A4 paper) so excuse the fact it’s a photograph:
Also excuse the masking tape holding the pages together, I prefer this to gluing as I can dismantle it as needed.
There’s a plan to recreate this in 3D using the Elder Scrolls Construction Set – a resource used to create extra content in a computer game, Oblivion. Unfortunately this would involve me learning how to use the construction set, so if done at all, will be done last.
The next is the sketch stage of the grounds. So far the main castleĀ is completed and awaiting inking. The forest will continue off the top of the page beyond the cliff wall (if some of you are wondering what the ‘stuff’ to the north of the grounds is: the castle is built on a slow rising hill that then drops off into a wooded valley, sideview sketch to follow the maps)
Once again, I can’t seem to fit everything onto one piece of paper, the castle just seems to expand every time I set pencil to paper. Also, you may notice the castle back-garden has changed a bit from the original map, this is because I felt it was too enclosed, the Lord and Lady would like a nice open garden after all!
That’s pretty much everything up to date now. Expect the animation to follow in the next couple of days, as well as the write-up of my first pen and paper roleplay session! And possibly some more actual artwork…
Portfolio
Ms Seehra now has an online portfolio!
http://rseehraportfolio.deviantart.com/
It’s on deviantART for the moment, out of ease, but at some point I plan to have a proper website and everything. More shall be added as it becomes available etc
(I prefer to use Ms rather than Miss because it makes me sound older…)
